On a hillside, water is always moving something
Every Golden lot is on its way downhill; the only question is how fast. Water from the early upslope snows and the sudden Chinook melts doesn't just run over your property, it travels through the soil beneath it, and moving water carries fines with it. Under a slab you can't see any of this happening. The concrete looks the same the day the ground below it is solid and the day a pocket of air has opened underneath. Void fill is the repair for that second day, done before the slab notices.
Thirty seconds with a steel rod tells the story
Drag a steel rod or a screwdriver handle across your slab and knock as you go. Supported concrete answers with a dead thud. A void answers with a ring, like knocking on a drum. We run this test across every slab during our free estimates, and it regularly saves Golden homeowners real money, because a slab that hasn't dropped yet only needs its void filled, not a full lift.
Where the ground under Golden slabs goes
Voids here trace back to a handful of causes, most of them tied to how this town's soil and weather behave:
- Slope drainage pulling fines downhill through the sub-base year after year
- Downspouts discharging onto sloped ground, which turns a gutter into an excavator
- Expansive clay shrinking when Golden's wind and dry spells pull the moisture out of the weathered shale

Filling is prevention; lifting is repair
The distinction matters for your wallet. Once a slab drops, you're paying to raise it back to grade. Fill the void while the slab is still sitting at grade and you skip that step entirely: we pump the same cement, sand, and topsoil slurry into the pocket until it's solid, and the slab never moves. If a slab has already started down and there's a void too, we can do both in one visit, pumping under pressure until it comes back up. Trevor will tell you plainly which situation you've got.
Newer builds get voids too, just younger ones
The mountain-edge construction tucked against the foothills is Golden's newest concrete, and it's not exempt. Steep-lot builds mean deep backfill, and backfill keeps consolidating for years after the landscaping goes in. We get called to houses barely a decade old where the front porch slab or the garage apron already rings hollow, not because anything was done wrong but because filled ground on a slope settles, period. Catching those pockets early, while the slab is still true, is the difference between a morning's void fill and a full lift later. If you're buying a home on one of these lots, a tap test during your walkthrough is ten minutes well spent.
The numbers on a Golden void fill
We quote by void volume, and most jobs land between $400 and $1,500. Small pocket under a porch pad, low end; long-running erosion channel under a driveway, higher. We're typically done in half a day, the slurry cures fast, and the slab is back in service the same day. Compare that against what the same pocket costs after it grows for a few more melt seasons and takes the slab down with it, and the math argues for the phone call. Set against foundation or replacement work, this is the cheapest line of defense we sell.
