The sidewalk lip that grew up with the neighborhood
Sidewalks in Centennial were mostly poured when the neighborhoods were: the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Decades later, the trees planted with those houses are full grown, the original base under the panels has done all the settling loose fill ever does, and the walk to your front door has developed edges. A panel a half inch proud of its neighbor catches toes in daylight and catches them worse under snow. It also catches snow shovel blades, which is how most people finally get annoyed enough to call us.
The fix is quick for most walkways. We drill the low panel, pump slurry beneath it, and raise it flush with its neighbors. Trevor will tell you at the estimate when you can walk on it, and the offset that used to grab your boot becomes a flat seam. No forms, no cure tape, no orange cones sitting out front for a week.
Why panels move more at this elevation
Altitude is quietly hard on flatwork. Centennial's colder nights push more freeze-thaw cycles through each winter than central Denver sees, and every cycle works like a small crowbar: water in the base freezes and lifts the panel, thaws and sets it down on ground that isn't quite where it was. Panels near the curb take the worst of it because street runoff keeps their base wet, and wet base is what freezing grabs. On lots that drain toward Cherry Creek or Piney Creek, steady undermining joins in as water crosses the property on its way downhill.
The result is the classic Centennial walkway: forty feet of perfectly good panels and one that's dropped or heaved out of line. Nobody should replace a whole walk for one panel. You lift the panel.
The math per panel
Lifting is priced per panel and quoted free, in person. Replacing a single 4'x6' panel costs two to three times as much by the time it's cut out, hauled off, formed, and re-poured, and the fresh pour cures a different shade than the rest of your walk. Lifting costs a fraction and matches perfectly, because it's the same concrete you already had, returned to where it belongs. Where Centennial walkways go wrong most often:
- Front walks under mature trees, where roots from the original landscaping have had four decades to reach the concrete.
- Panels beside the driveway apron, undercut by street water in every storm.
- The stretch below a downspout, the same washout that drops patios and driveways.
- Sections over old utility trenches, where loose backfill kept settling long after the builder moved on.
The tree root answer, straight
Those mature trees deserve their own paragraph. A dead root or an old washout under a shifted panel lifts fine and stays put. A live root still pushing is a different animal: lift over it and the root wins again inside a year or two, and we won't sell you that. Deal with the root first, only when the tree can spare it, or replace that single panel and let us lift the rest of the walk. We'd rather quote less and be right than quote more and be back.
Fast work, and worth batching
The truck stays at the curb while the portable pump works at the panel, so lawns, sprinkler heads, and flowerbeds stay untouched. Most jobs wrap in a single visit, and lifting three panels at once costs meaningfully less than three separate visits, so walk the whole property before we arrive and flag everything with an edge. Fall is the smart season for this: get the offsets out of the walk before snow hides them and the shoveling season starts finding them for you.
