More freeze-thaw cycles than anywhere else we work
Sidewalks die by the cycle, not by the year. Every time water under a panel freezes, expands, and thaws, the base shifts a little, and the panel shifts with it. Castle Rock, at 6,220 feet, is the highest and coldest town on our route, and its trademark weather is the big daily swing: warm enough by afternoon to melt snow into the joints, cold enough overnight to freeze it solid. One winter here can put more cycles through a sidewalk than two winters at lower metro elevations. That's why walkways in a town this young already have panels sitting a half inch or an inch out of plane.
Two kinds of sidewalk, two kinds of trouble
Around the old town core, the walks are the oldest concrete Castle Rock has, and they've had decades of those cycles plus mature tree roots working the panels. Out in the subdivision rings built from the 1990s onward, the concrete is newer but the ground under it is worse: construction backfill that keeps consolidating long after the builder left, over Dawson Formation soils whose clay layers swell with the wet spring snows and shrink through dry summers. Either way the result at your front step is the same, a raised edge waiting for a toe. We treat both the same on an estimate: measure every offset on the property, quote panel by panel, and let you decide how much of it to fix in one visit.
Why a raised edge is worth your attention
A lip over a quarter inch is a trip hazard by most municipal standards, and responsibility for the walk fronting your lot generally lands on the homeowner. That makes a sunken panel three problems wearing one crack: someone getting hurt, a citation, and the liability that follows both. The repair is small when the lift is small:
- Most walkways take a few hours start to finish

If you got a notice, don't sit on it. The gap between a courtesy letter and a re-inspection is usually short, and a quick lift settles it for a fraction of what a concrete crew would charge to saw out and re-pour the panel. How the panels come back up
We drill a few 1-1/2 inch holes in the settled panel, pump our cement, water, and sandy loam soil slurry underneath until the edge sits flush with its neighbor, and patch the holes. The slurry cures into a dense, stable fill, so the panel doesn't sink back into the same soft spot. Because each panel is quick, it's worth walking your whole property before we come: the front walk, the path to the back gate, the pad at the porch steps. Lifting four panels in one visit costs far less than four separate visits, and the crew is already set up, so the second panel goes faster than the first.
The root exception, told straight
If a tree root is actively pushing a panel up, lifting it buys you a year, maybe. We'll say so at the estimate. Either the root has to be dealt with first, or that panel needs to come out, and we'll tell you which. We'd rather lose a panel from the invoice than come back to a failed repair.
